Long ago in 1979, Ridley Scott’s “Alien” brought us our first real feminine action hero in Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley. Regardless of the three sequels that followed, Ripley turned out to be one thing of an outlier. Until fairly recently, a lady could destroy some body in a film only if she encountered brutal punishment afterward, such as Scott’s “Thelma and Louise, ” or in the inescapable fates of Bond girls: they might dole down life-threatening action, but hardly ever survived.
